Our Story
The Story of Wine and Mining
The beginnings of our winery date back to 2017 when we harvested grapes under the St. Barbara Winery brand for the first time. We are located in the very heart of the former mining area and continue the family tradition of growing wines in Ratíškovice. In the past, the entire area of Ratíškovice and the surrounding area was interwoven not only with vineyards but also with mining shafts, the remains of which can still be seen in some places today. For this reason, our winery bears the name of the patron saint of all miners - St. Barbara. The name of the St. Barbora Winery represents the connection between winemaking and former mining industry of the local region.
Wineyards
Our vineyards are located in the vineyard route Hrubé pole - the wine-growing village of Ratíškovice. The suitable soil structure together with the warm climate of the so-called Moravian Sahara with minimal rainfalls provide an excellent basis for the maturation of both white and blue grape varieties.
We planted approx 10.5 ha of new vineyards of which 3.6 ha had their first virgin harvest in 2017. Among the white varieties, there are Chardonnay, Hibernal, Moravian Muscat, Pálava, Silvaner Grün, Pinot Blanc, Traminer, Müller Thurgau, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon. These white varieties are complemented by Zweigeltrebe, Merlot, Blauer Portugieser and Pinot noir.
Wine Production
The winery is technologically completely self-sufficient. The most modern technologies are used to produce wine. White varieties are aged in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and the fermentation of blue varieties is carried out in stainless steel vinifiers. All red wines are matured in oak barrels. We lean towards classic grape processing procedures and a natural way of wine fermentation. This results in unique wines characterized by their typical varietal character.
